Biscuits and gravy, at least according to my hubby, are typically a pretty unhealthy meal. Surely, I thought, there must be (has to be) a way to make them healthier, right? And so my adventure began.
After searching around a little bit, I finally found a simple biscuits and gravy recipe, but decided to test out making it healthier. A few versions later, I think I have created it. It tastes great! It is husband approved! And it is healthy for sure!
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 1 lb of Turkey Sausage (we go for Jennie-O Lean Ground Turkey)
- 1/3 cup of Flour
- 3 cups of Non-Fat Milk (or low-fat is fine, too)
- Salt & Pepper (to taste)
- 1 roll of Biscuits (this is really where the fat content lies, so choose according to your values)
Here’s How You Make It:
Brown the sausage over medium-high heat until the meat is fully cooked.
While the meat is browning, begin preheating the oven for the biscuits.
After the meat is cook, there are two options. You can either drain the fat (especially if there is a lot) OR just leave it to be soaked up in the next couple of steps.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and pour HALF of the flour on to the meat. Stir until the sausage soaks it all up.
Pour in the remaining flour and stir. Let the meat/flour mixture cook for another minute or so.
NOTE: At this point, the biscuits should be in the oven.
Turn the burner up to medium-high heat again, pour in the milk and add any seasonings desired. Stir consistently until the gravy is very thick.
The gravy will start to thicken up after it has started to boil. It typically takes 10-12 minutes in our kitchen. If it looks too thick, add a LITTLE more milk.
Biscuits should be ready just about the time the gravy is thick and ready.
The gravy is served over hot biscuits and can be served with some eggs, hash browns and/or anything else.
I hope you enjoy this slightly healthier version of a classic favorite as much as we do in our house!
